MIRI, Oct 9 – Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, today officiated the grand opening of One Shell Square Miri, the new Shell Malaysia Upstream headquarters at Miri Times Square.
This marks a significant milestone in the development of Sarawak’s oil and gas industry, with Shell continuing to be a key partner to the state government in driving progress.
In his speech, Abang Johari praised the efforts of Sarawak Shell Berhad and Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd for realizing this new office building. He recalled the moment two years ago, in August 2022, when he witnessed the symbolic handover of the letter of award by Shell’s former chairman, Dato Ivan Tan, to Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd for the construction of the building.
“Shell has been a reliable partner in shaping Sarawak’s future. Your presence here for over a century is commendable,” said Abang Johari. “Together with the Sarawak Government, you have transformed Miri from a small village into a modern city.”
He also highlighting that the government’s commitment to promoting green technologies, particularly in the area of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). Abang Johari announced that Sarawak has enacted legislation to promote and develop offshore carbon storage sites, with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) designated as the resource manager for these projects.
“We have initiated three CCUS projects, including one involving a consortium of Japanese oil and gas companies. Any parties interested in CCUS projects should liaise with Petros as the resource manager,” he added.
He also emphasized the cutting-edge features of One Shell Square, including Shell Recharge EV, the first electric and hybrid vehicle charging station in East Malaysia, and Shell Café, a new branded F&B outlet within the building.
Also present at the event were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, Executive Vice President, Shell Conventional Oil and Gas Mr. Peter Costello, Country Chair Shell Malaysia and Senior Vice President Integrated Gas & Upstream Malaysia Puan Siti Sulaiman and Senior Vice President, Malaysia Petroleum Management, Petronas Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong.
